I have only recently began to have interest in my genealogy after finding the book The Genealogy of the Allen Family, by J. Scott Morris, 1951. I have long been interested in History, British and medieval history in specific, especially Scottish history. Since 1997 I have worked at the curator and historian for the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin, NC. Growing up, I was always told I was British, which I took to mean English. After doing a bit of preliminary research, however, I found that while most all the names on my father's side of the family were English, quite a few from my mother's side were Scottish.

My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Edith Mae Armstrong (married Calvin Allen). Armstrong is a very prominent Scottish border clan. My great-grandmother was Susie Lou Carlisle (mother of Calvin Allen). Carlisle is another border name, and is considered part of clan Bruce. However, I have always chosen to ally myself with the Clan Donald through my mother's maiden name of Allen.
The Allen name is one that you will find in England, Scotland and Ireland, and has several origins. There is the Breton name Alan, the name coming to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. There is also the Gaelic name Ailin, from Ail, meaning "rock." In Scotland, the Allens are common, and various families are associated with the MacDonalds of Clanranald, the MacFarlanes, the MacKays and the Grants. While I did not know for certain that my Allens were from the Clan Donald branch, I had assumed they were Scottish, primarily because they had settles in the American south, and the family tended to marry those with Scottish names.
However, using the genealogy book mentioned above, obtained from my great-aunt Vivian Collier, I found that our Allens actually came to America from England. After the War of 1812, Josiah Allen and his brothers left England and came to SC. While in SC, however, Josiah, my great-great-great-grandfather married an Irish immigrant, Mary Elizabeth McGuire. We know little about her other than the fact that she was born in Ireland, her parents died, and she was then raised by a neighbor family. When her foster family migrated to America, she came with them. Because she settled in the Southeastern US and was a Protestant, chances are great that she was from Northern Ireland and of Ulster Scot descent.
The McGuires are associated with the clan MacQuarrie of Ulva, who held lands in the western seaboard of Scotland from the Lords of the Isles, the MacDonalds, and were in many respects a branch of that clan. After the Lordship lost political power, the MacQuarries gained some independence, but still tended to follow the more powerful clans around them, such as the MacLeans of Duart. So you see, even though my Allens proved not to be of Clan Donald, I do have some justification for my affiliation with the great Lords of the Isles after all.
All of these Scottish connections come from my mother's side of the family. My father's side is predominantly English. Newsome and Moseley are northern English names, their culture being very similar to the border regions of Scotland. However, my father's name, Linwood, is the name of a small town in Scotland, so I suspected there were some Scottish ties. I looked up my great-grandmother's name of Briggs and found it to be Scottish. It is the Scots form of "bridge" and is common around Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Although not part of a clan, they can wear the Aberdeen district tartan.

Bio: Private, Company 1, 46th Regiment GA Infantry in Civil War. Enlisted 3/4/1862. Surrendered at Greensboro, NC, 4/26/1865. Nicknamed "General Gist." He served under a General Gist, and when the Gen. was shot from his horse, George mounted it and led the troops into battle, after which they called him "General Gist." The name stuck with him after the War.
